"Waiting for Jet Ski World Finals, Starline Students Study Countries"

by, Zach Matson

Kay Sykes presents, "The Parade of Nations"

Students each chose a country that will be represented at this year's IJSBA (jet ski) World Finals.  During independent work time, they must research information about their specific country.  They may work on this project at home, but will also be given computer lab time to work on it at school.  There are certain requirements all students must meet, however they may choose the format in which to present this information.  I have purchased some large posters that students can "fill in" with their country's information and then color/decorate as desired.  Other students expressed interest in creating a PowerPoint or Prezi presentation to share their information.  Help your child get creative and learn something new about a different culture. Have fun with it!!!  I can't wait to share what we've learned and take our new knowledge with us to the World Finals where we will ACTUALLY meet people from around the world.

INFORMATION:

5th Grade Math

6th Grade Math

5th graders have been working on strengthening their place value understanding.  We started off with powers of ten, then moved into exponents, reading and writing decimals to the thousandths place, rounding decimals, adding and subtracting decimal numbers, and now we are finally moving into multiplying and dividing decimals.

6th graders have been working on coordinate planes, integers, and opposites as in negative numbers.  It started off pretty smooth and easy, but got REAL serious, REAL fast!  hehehehehe  Don't worry- tell them to hang in there (and you too, if you've been trying to help them at night with their homework)!  It sometimes takes us 2-3 days just to work through one problem, but I guarantee you- your child will have a deep understanding of ratios and rates, and their application to the real world, by the end of the first quarter.

New Pages on the Site:

PHOTOS and ARCHIVE

"Cite evidence from the text!"  Your child hears that every...single...day from me.  Learning close reading strategies has been a huge focus for us so far.  Students practice and apply these strategies with "The Lightning Thief" and paired texts from Ancient Greek mythology.  Your child should be able to give you solid evidence of how Percy Jackson is on a 'hero's journey,' and how we can make inferences about his character from the challenges and responses his faces in the novel.

Check out the two new pages on our site: PHOTOS and ARCHIVE.  I will try to update the photos page as soon as possible after a fun event with out class.  The ARCHIVE page is where I'll store "old news" that was on the site, but may still be useful/interesting to you.  Enjoy!!

PICTURE DAY

Sept. 18th

Say cheese!  Friday, September 18th, is Picture Day.  Students should come dressed in their best.  Don't worry, they can stay inside for recess to avoid overly sweating in nice clothes!

FIELD TRIP: Library

Sept. 21st, 9:30 - 11:30 AM

Monday, September 21, we will be taking our next field trip to the Mohave County Library.  Mrs. Blythe's class will be joining us this time.  If there are any parents willing to volunteer, we would greatly appreciate extra eyes to help students find books and work quietly. :)

BOOK FAIR

Sept. 21- 25

Starline's first book fair of the year will be the week of September 21-25.  Students will have a chance to go with the whole class to preview the book fair Friday the 18th.  The week of the fair, we will go together once as a class to purchase.  During recess, students who are ready to purchase will be allowed to go.
