Little Things You Can Do to Make a BIG Difference

1

DON'T ASK, "HOW WAS SCHOOL TODAY?"

Instead, ask, "What was the best part of your day?"  (Or spice it up and ask for the 'worst' part of their day- but hopefully it's not that bad!!)  Asking this open-ended type of question will encourage more discussion on your child's part.  They won't be able to answer you with a "fine" or "good."

2

LISTEN TO THEM.

Put down the phone, turn off the t.v., and give them your 100% undivided attention- even if it's for only 5 minutes.  Trust me, they always have something to say.  They just don't always feel like they have our attention.  Looking them in the eye instead of talking while looking somewhere else "says" a lot.

REINFORCE A "GROWTH MINDSET"

In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities.  Click below to learn more about a "Growth Mindset":

I am interested in using Adobe Photoshop in the classroom.  There are several different options available for purchase, so I am asking for any suggestions / recommendations.  If any of you have used Photoshop before, I would value your input!  One of the first projects I would like to use this for is the ENVISION: Travel Passport project.  I want students to use Photoshop to edit themselves into photos for their mock vacation.  The kids would LOVE this!  Another Photoshop project I want to work on is having the kids edit themselves into pictures of themselves as a small child.  See below for an example of what I mean:

VOLUNTEER TODAY

WE'RE ALWAYS SEARCHING FOR VOLUNTEERS, PLEASE JOIN US!
The next Volunteer Orientation is:

September 9th
4:30 pm

All parents who want to volunteer at Starline must first go through a training provided by the front office and Volunteer Committee.  The purpose of the training is to make sure everyone is aware of privacy and safety concerns in dealing with other children, as well as proper use of school equipment (like the copier, laminator, and cutter).  We appreciate your support and understanding.  Please sign up in the front office for one of these trainings.
