The Lightning Thief
by, Rick Riordan
We began reading The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan this week. We are using this text to learn expectations for "close reading," making inferences, answering text-dependent questions, using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words, and more! The kids were really excited when I passed out the books! Students will be expected to read parts of the book at home. We deeply analyze sections of the text in class, but I do not spend class time reading entire chapters at a time. Please check their planners nightly to see what chapter they are expected to read independently.
"Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. And that's the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he's angered a few of them. Zeus's master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus's stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed in his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves. "
I introduced the students to a fun, new formative assessment tool: Kahoot! I create a short quiz and the kids use their devices to answer as quickly and accurately as they can to earn points and claim glory on the leaderboard! Check out the video below to see more on Kahoot!
When Paul Faustino of LA NACION flips on his tape recorder for an exclusive interview with El Gato — the phenomenal goalkeeper who single-handedly brought his team the World Cup — the seasoned reporter quickly learns that this will be no ordinary story. Instead, the legendary El Gato narrates a spellbinding tale that begins in the South American rainforest, where a ghostly but very real mentor, the Keeper, emerges to teach a poor, gawky boy the most thrilling secrets of the game. - from Amazon.com
